It is only the 10th time the neighbouring nations have met in the past 40 years, with the most recent six games all ending in a draw. England have not beaten Ireland since 1985, and the last meeting was a 0-0 in 2015 when Jamie Vardy made his debut.

It’s an England debut for Dean Henderson, who replaces the utterly untested Nick Pope at the break.

HALF TIME: England 2-0 Ireland

Maguire and Sancho with the goals for England. No shots so far for Ireland. Routine stuff for Southgate’s changed line-up.

Mings fired a shot into the side-netting just before the whistle which would have wrapped the win up no doubt.

44’ – England 2-0 Ireland

O’Shea fouls Calvert-Lewin with a hefty challenge after he lost possession. Probably gets a yellow in a more relevant game. The Everton striker has been busy, but hasn’t seen the ball come to him too much inside the box tonight.

40’ – England 2-0 Ireland

Into the final five minutes of the half. Ireland not really threatening to create chances and they’re struggling to get in behind England’s wing-backs.

36’ – England 2-0 Ireland

Sancho tries to dribble his way through after a good pass from Grealish, but Christie makes the block this time.

GOAL – 31’ – England 2-0 Ireland

All too easy – Sancho picks the ball up on the left side of the box, drops a shoulder to create a gap to fire into and drills his low shot into the far bottom corner to double England’s lead.

30’ – England 1-0 Ireland

Sancho attacks down the left, loses the ball to Christie, his pass to Duffy is intercepted by Calvert-Lewin, his attempted dribble bobbles off the defender and out of play. Not much control or sharpness in the pass by either team tonight, but England look by far the bigger threat.

26’ – England 1-0 Ireland

James and Grealish combine well down the right to work a crossing chance, but Duffy flies across to block Calvert-Lewin’s shot. From the corner Maguire has another header at goal – but it’s central and tipped over by Randolph.

22’ – England 1-0 Ireland

Lots of misplaced passes and poor first touches on show this evening. It’s almost as though there’s not a whole lot riding on the game and the players aren’t fully focused.
