The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced two new additions to their communications department in a move a royal insider has claimed is an acknowledgement they are “no longer the golden couple”. Meghan, 39, and Harry, 36, have triggered widespread backlash from the public in recent months following their decision to quit the Royal Family and move to the US.

The couple have been accused of cashing-in on their royal titles after signing a multi-million pound deal with streaming giant Netflix.

Continued lectures over climate change from their Hollywood mansion in LA and recent meddling in the US election has also not gone down well within royal circles.

A royal insider has claimed the couple are concerned with comparisons to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and are keen to brush-off their selfish tag.

A source said: “Meghan is well aware that she and Harry are no longer the golden couple.

“Prince William and Kate can do no wrong now as far as the UK is concerned, whereas she and Harry are seen as a self-interested couple who quit the Royal Family to pursue their own interests.

“Meghan hopes to turn things around and show people how committed to doing good she is, and for them to see a different, more positive side to her.”

At this stage the overhaul of their top team is not regarded as “crisis management” but sources say they could be on the brink.

Speaking to The Sun, the royal insider added: “Whilst this isn’t crisis management as such, given her popularity ratings right now, it’s not far off.

“She’s taken on two ambitious, smart, career-driven women who have her best interests at heart.”

The couple has confirmed Christine Schirmer will be tasked with turning their public image around after being appointed head of communications.

She previously held the same position with image-sharing and social media service Pinterest.

Meanwhile, Toya Holness who previously worked at the New York City Department of Education, will join as press secretary.

The duo will work alongside Hollywood PR firm Sunshine Sachs and their UK-based PR chief James Holt.

Meghan and Harry have already lined up a number of exciting projects including their own charitable organisation Archewell.

Last month a “landing page” was been set up for the venture, with those interested invited to submit their email address to receive updates about “activities and initiatives”.

The platform describes the name ‘Arche’ as an ancient Greek word meaning “source of action”, with full details of the organisation yet to be finalised.

A lucrative deal with Netflix which is worth a reported £100 million will see couple create a range of programmes and films.

A spokeswoman for the couple said: “The office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex expanded its existing communications team with the addition of Christine Schirmer as head of communications and Toya Holness as press secretary.

“The new hires joined the team in October and bring extensive communications experience from several different industries.

“They join James Holt, who serves as communications lead in the UK, and will continue to work with Sunshine Sachs, the duke and duchess’s international agency of record.

“Together, the group will oversee the communications strategy for Archewell, future production projects, and other personal ventures.”
