A Secret police squad set up to investigate other possible Yorkshire Ripper attacks included several unsolved Scottish murders.

An inquiry, led by then West Yorkshire Police chief constable Keith Hellawell, focused on the Dundee murders of Carol Lannen in 1979 and Elizabeth McCabe in 1980 and the 1977 Glasgow killings of Agnes Cooney, Anna Kenny and Hilda McAuley.

Sutcliffe was also probed over the murder of Mary Gallagher in Glasgow in 1978.

The death of Carol Lannen was investigated

Sutcliffe was visited in jail by Hellawell and Scots detectives to quiz him about the killings.

However Sutcliffe was later cleared of any involvement in the Scottish murders after DNA samples ruled him out.

Sutcliffe tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from hospital for an unrelated health condition earlier this month.

The murderer, who was serving his sentence at HMP Frankland in Durham, died in hospital according to a prison spokesman.

He was serving a whole life term after brutally killing 13 women and attempting to murder seven more.

Sutcliffe was dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper because he mutilated his victims with a hammer, knife and a sharpened screwdriver during his reign of terror in the 1970s and 80s.

While he was in Parkhurst, Sutcliffe was attack by Scots prisoner James Costello.

Costello, 35, stabbed him twice in the face with a broken coffee jar which left the ripper needing 30 stitches and an operation to repair muscle damage. Costello was sentenced to another five years and sent to Broadmoor. A year later, Sutcliffe was also moved to Broadmoor.

We previously told how brave Richard McCann, who was just five-years-old when his mum Wilma McCann, 28, from Skye, was murdered by evil Sutcliffe, wrote a compassionate letter to his family.

Despite the shadow Sutcliffe has cast over the McCann family, Richard got in touch with the killer’s brother Carl when news of his death broke yesterday.

He said: “I gave Carl a call when I got the news to offer my condolences. Carl Sutcliffe reached out to me many years ago when he read about my journey – he reached out to me with compassion and I felt the same.

“I know he obviously did some horrendous things but he was still his brother so I felt like I wanted to call him.”

Richard added: “I am sorry to hear he has passed away. It’s not something I could have said in the past when I was consumed with anger.”
