Covid-19 case rates increase in over 200 areas despite UK lockdown – see full list – Mirror Online

Coronavirus case rates have increased in around 230 areas across the UK, despite the UK having spent 13 days under a second nationwide lockdown.

New figures out today show one area has seen its case rate more than double, while others have seen it increase by over 100.

There is some good news though, as several northern hotspots which have been under stricter local – and then tiered – lockdowns for several months are seeing case rates plummet.

In today’s update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases for every local authority area in England, Public Health England figures are taken from the seven days to November 14.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

In the borough of Swale , in Kent, which includes the Isle of Sheppey, there were 928 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 14 – a case rate of 618.3 cases per 100,000 people, in the area.

This is up from 304.5 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to November 7 – or 457 cases in total, meaning the area’s case rate has more than doubled.

Swale now has the second highest rate in the country, leaping several places in the list.

Cllr Roger Truelove, the leader of Swale Borough Council, said: “Unless we can level off the rate of growth in Covid infections in the borough, we risk a longer period of high-level restrictions beyond December 2.”

He added: “Swale now has the second highest rate of infection in Kent with increasing numbers in care homes and a higher rate of infection amongst 65+ age group than in many parts of the county.

However, majority of areas in England have seen a rise in cases.

The figures, for the seven days to November 14, are based on tests carried out in laboratories – pillar one of the Government’s testing programme – and in the wider community – pillar two.

Data for the most recent four days, November 15 to 18, has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list is based on Public Health England data published on November 18 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
