Brighton & Hove Albion are set to be without Tariq Lamptey for their game against Liverpool next week.

The Seagulls ended a run of six matches without a win on Saturday afternoon as they overcame Aston Villa 2-1.

Yet they suffered a blow late on in the game when Lamptey picked up two yellow cards in two minutes to be sent off.

It was a moment of ill-discipline from the youngster, with Lamptey going into a tackle late to see red in the 91st minute as his side tried to see out the victory.

A one-match suspension will now see the full-back miss out on facing Liverpool.

It represents a blow for Brighton, with the 20-year-old having been one of the surprise hits of the season so far thanks to his excellent displays at right-back.

He signed for Brighton from Chelsea in January 2020 and has gone on to establish himself as the Seagulls’ first-choice right-back.

Speaking prior to facing Aston Villa, Brighton boss Graham Potter told the Argus that Lamptey could well earn an England call-up thanks to his good form.

He said: “He’s desperate to play, so that emotion, that desire, overrides

“He doesn’t have any experiences that are telling him he can’t do this or can’t do that so he’s just going into every game wanting to show what he can do.

“He will learn as he goes and hopefully the experiences don’t beat him down and he remains fresh and positive and enjoying his football because ultimately that’s what you want your players to be, to enjoy it.

“There’s a lot of suffering going on in the world and we’re really lucky to be playing football, as much as anyone wants to make it seem like a really pressured situation.

“It is football and we are so, so lucky and you want to help the players enjoy that and take that challenge on and enjoy the feeling of struggle, which there is on the pitch at times.”

He added: “Tariq’s a little bit different. His speed is incredible and maybe he just offers something the others don’t.

“But it’s great for English football. There is huge competition for places and I’m sure Gareth Southgate would want that competition for places in all positions and not just the one. But Tariq will take the fight on for sure.”

Lamptey’s absence will likely see summer signing Joel Veltman step in on the right for Brighton.
