Piers Morgan took aim at Matt Hancock after the MP denied saying that he was “following the science” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Good Morning Britain also went on to play a collection of clips of the Health Secretary saying as such during interviews and press conferences.
This week, the MP has appeared in front of a joint science select committee, with Jeremy Hunt, the chair and former Health Secretary, and was probed on whether he had always followed the science.
He had replied: “I prefer to say that we were always guided by the science.”
However, Hunt had responded: “But you did used to say you were following the science.”
To which Hancock had snapped: “I was merely being colloquial on those occasions.”
An outraged Piers exclaimed after watching the clip of the exchange: “I’m sorry, what?! And it was a colloquialism?!
“Let me remind you, Mr Hancock, you said repeatedly – as did the prime minister, as did every cabinet minister for months – that you were following the science. In other words, you were doing what the science was telling you to do. You weren’t being guided by the science, that’s what we were saying you ought to be doing.
“We were saying you ought to listen to expert advice and make decisions – that’s what we were saying, not you.
“Let us remind you, given this chronic amnesia, which seems to have broken out. This is what you said in your own words.”
After sharing a number of clips of Hancock repeatedly saying he was “following the science”, Piers questioned: “What bit of that don’t you remember? Or was that all colloquialisms?
“Colloquialisms – what a convenient word. Is he preparing for the inquiry?”
