She missed out on winning The Great British Bake Off after making it to the final.

Yet Laura Adlington was given an equally fantastic prize on Friday, as she met her childhood icon Emma Bunton during an appearance on spin-off show Extra Slice.

Laura, 31, beamed with delight as she flashed the peace sign while standing beside the Spice Girl, 44, wearing a chic black tuxedo dress.

Singer Emma looked sensational in a dazzling bejewelled black jacket over a camisole, which she teamed with slim-fitting black trousers.

She wore her bright blonde locks in loose glamorous waves and accentuated her pretty features with a neutrally toned pallet of make-up.

Laura sweetly captioned the snap: ‘I’m pretty sure if you told 8-year-old me (who religiously made up dance routines to 2-become-1 in the playground) she would be SQUEALING with excitement at this…✌️ #spicegirlforlife #gbbo #bakeoff.’

With the added pressure of creating custard in a warm tent at the height of the summer heatwave, the star was left emotional over her melting creations.

Commenting at the end of the task, Laura said: ‘Oh dear, I need more time!’ before adding: ‘Oh, I am so sorry.’

The contestant then walked over to the freezer where she stuck her head into it to cool down and started to cry.

To which fellow baker, Dave Friday, asked: ‘You alright, Laura?’

With Laura admitting: ‘I just feel so embarrassed.’

Yet despite the creations not setting in time, judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith praised her for her ‘sharp and strong flavours’.

With Prue sweetly telling a tearful Laura: ‘You’ve had a bad morning but it tastes delicious. You’re going to have a great afternoon.’

Fans were quick to praise Laura for ‘keeping it real’ and joked that everyone had ‘cried into the freezer at least once this year’ amid the coronavirus crisis.

Viewers were left disappointed as the digital manager was spared alongside armoured guard Dave, 31, and student Peter, 20, while the accountant, 39 – who has garnered attention throughout the series for her speculator dishes – was sent home.

Laura took to Twitter to address the backlash she’s received for her co-star’s exit, insisting: ‘It’s easy to sit there on your sofa and judge. But I am a real person with feelings.’

Peter was crowned the winner of the 2020 Great British Bake Off on Tuesday night as he became the show’s youngest ever champion.

The accounting and finance student, 20, impressed judges Paul and Prue after going against Dave and Laura in the tent.

During Tuesday’s final (complete with a brief thunderstorm!), the three bakers had to make eight beautifully decorated custard slices as the signature bake, eight walnut whirls as the technical challenge and dessert towers as the showstopper.

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the contestants weren’t joined by their family and friends for the first time ever during a finale on the show. They instead were sent video messages.

Yet the tent wasn’t left empty as the cast and crew of Bake Off, which formed a bubble with the contestants, were on hand to give their support and taste their showstopper creations.

The contestants formed a ‘biosphere’ with the cast and crew of Bake Off after quarantining for nine days, with everyone involved tested three times before filming started over the summer.

After impressing the judges with his cranachan custard slices, walnut whirls and his ‘bonkers Bake Off [festive] bubble cake’, Peter was announced the winner.

The Scottish student was left speechless over the announcement as he remarked: ‘No, I can’t believe that I am here…

‘I can’t quite believe that I made it onto the show, that the show happened and this is going to be such a huge chapter of my life. What a way for it to end!’

Peter then excitedly phoned his family and friends to share the news as he proudly held the Bake Off winner glass cake stand.
