Matt Hancock has said North Somerset will be looked at ‘on its own merits’ when the Tier system is reviewed.

North Somerset will be placed into tier 3 when England’s four-week lockdown ends tomorrow (Wednesday, December 2), while the other five regions of Somerset find themselves in tier 2.

People across the area were urged to do more to help bring the district into a lower tier of restrictions last week and cases of coronavirus across the district, which has a population of just over 200,000, have started to fall in recent days.

The rate now stands at 185.1 per 100,000 population compared to the England average of 167.8 per 100,000 and the south west rate of 103.4.

Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose has this morning (Tuesday, December 1) shared a letter he has received from the health secretary Matt Hancock.

The letter says: “As I made clear, we will be legally bound to formally review these decisions on 16 December and every two weeks thereafter.

“In these reviews, I can assure you that we will look at North Somerset on its own merits, based on the five criteria we set out in the Winter Plan, based on public health advice including from the Joint Biosecurity Centre and the Chief Medical Officer.”

The health secretary then went on to say: “I very much hope that North Somerset’s case rates continue to improve, and such progress will of course be factored into these decisions in each of the formal reviews.”

The MP said the reply came after calls with himself and Liam Fox – the MP for North Somerset – over the weekend.

Mr Penrose said the letter showed Mr Hancock was listening and that North Somerset should qualify for Tier 2 next time – but that would leave the area in Tier 3 until then.
